Train on the SchafbergBahn

Were you able to enjoy a close-up view of all those charming little details at the market stands? Or do you prefer a broader overview of everything? If you do, the Schafbergbahn’s Advent Train makes it possible in a magical way.

From Thursday to Sunday, the Advent Train trundles off every hour on its way up the snowy Schafberg (Thursday and Friday, hourly from 11 AM; Saturday and Sunday, hourly from 10 AM). Gliding between wintry mountain forests, the ride takes you to the second siding (above the Dorneralpe) at 1015 m above sea level. A festively decked-out rail carriage of the SchafbergBahn will serve as a hut to serve hot punch.

The steepest cog railway in Austria was built in 1893. From May until October, it climbs 1190 m in elevation and a distance of 5.83 km until it finally reaches the top of the 1783 m-tall Schafberg.

In July and August, the vintage steam locomotives – some of the oldest in the world (built 1893,1894) – are put back into operation. Four modern steam locomotives, a diesel locomotive and two diesel-electric locomotives operate all season long.

Fare for the Advent Train 2019: € 17.50 per person for the ride up and down the mountain.

Tickets can be bought right there at the SchafbergBahn valley terminal. For groups of 20 or more, reservations are required at Tel. +43 (0)6138 / 2232-0 or by email
